FREDERICIA FURNITURE A/S uses leather produced from the finest raw hides. Both the chronium tanned and the vegetable tanned leather have natural grain, which provides the greatest strength obtainable, but also leaves the scratches and scars which the animal had while still alive.

Chroniumtanned leather
The chronium tanned leather is aniline dyed with a slight pigmentation and surface protection. The hair follicles are still open. This provides a strong and more light fastness surface.

Vegetabletanned leather
The vegetable tanned leather, also called bioleather, is a pure natural leather without surface protection. The vegetable leather is very sensitive and susceptile to stains, and it will change colour (patinate) when subjected to light.

Care of leather

Vegetable-tanned leather (leather without surface treatment/protection)

Before use:
While the furniture is completely new, you should not apply any kind of preventive treatment. Wait a minimum of approximately 6 months before washing the furniture in a soap flake solution.

Dissolve ½ dl of white soap flakes in 3 litres of boiled or demineralisered hot water. Allow the solution to cool until lukewarm, and then clean the entire piece of furniture gently and evenly, using a soft, slightly wrung cloth. Clean loose cushions individually, and make sure all surfaces are equally saturated.

After cleaning, polish with a very soft dry cloth.

Daily maintenance and cleaning:

Wipe with a soft dry cloth. In cases of spots or soiling, clean the entire surface using a soap flake solution, as described above. Wash the entire piece of furniture about once a year in a soap flake solution to prevent the leather from drying out. If the furniture is exposed to direct heat from the sun or from radiators, it should be washed twice a year.

Surface-treated leather (semi-annilin leather, surface-dyed leather)

Before use:

No preventative treatment.

Daily maintenance and cleaning:

Wipe with a very soft dry cloth, or with a soft cloth well wrung in clean water. In case of spots or severe soiling, a mild soap flake solution is used (1/4 dl soap flakes in 3 litre of hand-warm water). After cleaning, polish with a very soft dry cloth.

IMPORTANT: Over-use of soap flakes on surface-treated leather will spoil and remove the surface treatment. The furniture should consequently be washed approximately once a year in a weak solution only, as described above. Using clean water to wash the leather regularly, on the other hand, will never damage the leather, but will supply the leather with moisture that will allow it to retain its suppleness for many
years.
