Dedicated to texture and time

The premiere results of the alliance between Fredericia Furniture and designer Sofie Østerby are the Hydro vase in sand cast brass and the Locus bowl in travertine which launched in 2020. “It has been an interesting collaboration, with a great dialogue and open-minded approach from both parts.” Sofie Østerby says on her work with the design company.

The Possibilities of Materials
Especially when paying great attention to the finish of the surface of her products Østerby is driven by curiosity.
The experiences have formed her further approach when creating products that interacts with the surrounding environment. How the shape is felt and experienced visually are both important subjects and the texture of a product encompasses both. “Exploring new techniques and methods is my kind of research. In my studio I keep samples of all materials used in my works. It is fascinating to experience how a new material acts over time, it piques my inquisitiveness and I preoccupy myself in the possibilities of the material.” says Østerby on one of her focuses.

Tempo and Daringness

Contemporary art is a great inspiration to Østerby. She lives with both historic Danish furniture, pieces passed on from her family, and found objects of interest. Collected art works fill the walls in her home. It is in art she finds her inspiration for example when visiting the Venice Biennale. Contemporary artists who create works which are exaggerated and wild and have a daring approach to push borders fascinates Østerby; “I like the tempo and daringness in contemporary art.”

A ‘Hand On’ Method
Østerby finds inspiration in fashion, movies, sound design, architecture and other kinds of genres as well as just being in nature and the city. Attentiveness is exactly what drives Østerby. It is important to the young designer that we surround ourselves with pieces made to last. Her idiom carries a strive for texture and timelessness.

The products are created from a ‘hands on’ method with emphasis on material source, connectedness, memories, history, and narration. Østerby incorporates a base anchored in the cultural history and heritage and works with a clear aesthetics idiom. The works from Østerby accommodate both a strict geometry and a structured rawness. They appear timeless; like objects created centuries ago and in the future at the same time.
