Cecilie Manz's Tokyo Guide

Cecilie Manz’s relationship with Japan began in childhood, when her parents, both ceramic artists, for a time lived with the family in Arita, a town long associated with porcelain making. At 18, she returned on her own, travelling through the country with little more than a handful of addresses in her pocket. In the years since, work has brought her back regularly. Tokyo, in particular, has become a place of both routine and serendipitous discovery.

Her visits have developed their own small traditions: going to the same museum even when the exhibition has not changed, frequenting the same coffee shop, pulling a favourite drink from a vending machine (iced green tea). “When you travel, you create traditions for yourself,” she says. “It gives you something to look forward to, a way to enter the place.” Familiarity has not diminished her curiosity. Tokyo, as Manz sees it, is “20 cities in one”: take the train to a station you don’t know, step out and see what happens.

Her guide moves between these two impulses. There are places she returns to again and again, but also flea markets, workshops, backstreets and ordinary neighbourhoods best experienced without an agenda. What connects them is an attentiveness to ordinary things: how they are made, used, maintained and valued. In Tokyo, Manz finds this as readily in an old bicycle or a carefully tended plant outside someone’s home as she does in a museum collection.

Here, she shares six places – and ways of looking – to return to and get lost in.

An appreciation for Japanese craft

Mingeikan Museum /Japan Folk Crafts Museum - Meguro-ku district

My favourite museum in Tokyo. I always take the time to go and enjoy the wonderful collection of Mingei crafts: textile, pottery, utensils. The no-photography policy inside the museum makes you pay extra attention to the objects. It was founded in the 1930s by Seotsu Yanagi, the Mingei movement’s leading figure. His private residence across the street is open on selected days.

Nezu Museum - Minami-Aoyama district

The museum has a very nice collection of fine crafts/art and a beautiful Japanese garden.

21_21 Design Sight  - Tokyo Midtown

Another must when in Tokyo is Issey Miyake's (& friends) design gallery that always has interesting exhibitions. Often with unexpected perspectives on design details, construction methods and overall phenomenas.

Details of Everyday

Temple Flea Market

A flea market is a perfect opportunity to see what used to be used in Japanese everyday households. Old tools, regional different porcelain ware, old textiles and unexpected, weird stuff.

Blue Bottle - Aoyama and other locations

The Aoyama cafe always appears in my itinerary between museum visits and meetings. Nice to be able to sit outside overlooking the trees with good coffee.

Local Areas - around the Nihonbashi, Meguro-ku, Suginami-ku districts

I highly recommend to allow yourself to stroll around without an agenda in a unknown, local area, just following your own path. You will always find something interesting to see in the small back streets away from the gentrified buzz.

See how people meticulously maintain their entrance areas with bikes, rubber boots, half-alive plants. Discover shops selling nerdy things like kendo sticks, (real) work clothes or tiny one-man workshops still making tools by hand.
