A new era in circular design
The newest member of the Pato Collection takes a big step toward a regenerative design future. Built in collaboration with Swedish innovators PaperShell, the chair’s shell is crafted entirely from biogenic material – fossil-free, chemical-free, and designed for full circularity.
With the Pato Paper Chair, timeless Scandinavian design meets radical sustainability, setting a new standard for high-performance furniture made to last and made responsibly.
“ We are proud to finally launch our partnership with Fredericia. The introduction of Pato Paper Chair, crafted from PaperShell material, underscores our shared ambition to lead the industry toward a more sustainable future, where design, durability, and environmental responsibility go hand in hand. ”

Design meets pioneering innovation
Hee Welling and Gudmundur Ludvik prove that the basics can constantly be reinvented. Combining their functional and human-centred designs with environmental craftsmanship, focusing on comfort, materials, construction, and the environment.
Reflecting on the collaboration with PaperShell, Hee Welling says, "Once in a while, a material pops up that solves all the issues and all the problems we normally struggle with. And PaperShell is an amazing example of that."
100% biobased material
PaperShell is produced from FSC-certified craft paper and impregnated with a bio-based binder. It is sourced entirely from biological residues from Nordic forestry and agricultural industries, reflecting a commitment to eco-friendly innovation.
It is 100% biobased, 100% fossil-free, and, when circulated correctly, has the potential to become carbon-negative.
When correctly processed via pyrolysis, PaperShell can return to the earth as high-grade biochar, a carbon-rich substance that captures CO2 and promotes soil regeneration. This makes it potentially carbon-negative at the end of life. Currently, PaperShell supplies biochar to plant nurseries, where it is used to enhance soil quality and plant growth.

Pato is a versatile chair concept based on a moulded shell and a wide range of bases. The multi-purpose Pato Collection is ideal for spaces designed for lounging, dining, working and living.
PaperShell is now available as a seat option for the Pato Chair, continuing the chair's legacy of responsible design and forward-thinking innovation. Its natural qualities are expressed through a semi-gloss finish, with tones ranging from reddish-brown to deep black. Each seat has a unique surface expression while maintaining a cohesive appearance when grouped.
