The Canvas Chair Outdoor: A classic reimagined for the outside

Originally drawn in 1970, the Canvas Chair was one of Børge Mogensen’s final works - a distilled study in proportion, clarity, and comfort. The design reflects his enduring belief that furniture should be defined by its construction and by the way it is used.

In this new adaptation, The Canvas Chair Outdoor, the essential character of the chair remains intact. Its familiar silhouette and exposed joinery are preserved, while the materials have been carefully selected to meet the demands of exterior living. Rather than altering the original intent, the outdoor version extends it - allowing a considered, architectural form to exist comfortably in open air.

Materiality in dialogue

The Canvas Chair Outdoor is defined by the relationship between two elements: FSC-certified teak and suspended canvas. The frame establishes structure and permanence; the textile introduces flexibility and ease. Together, they create a balance that feels both grounded and light.

The joinery remains visible, expressing how the chair is assembled and how it carries weight. Each connection is integral to the overall composition, reinforcing the clarity of the design.

Over time, the materials, chosen for their density and resilience, and for the way they develop a soft patina, respond to use and environment - the teak silvering subtly, the canvas maintaining its soft tension. The dialogue between them is continuous, shaped by touch, light, and climate.

Versatility and precision

Adapted for contemporary living, the Canvas Chair Outdoor moves effortlessly between interior and exterior settings. It feels equally at home on a terrace, in a garden, or within a space that opens to the landscape. Comfort is embedded in the construction: the angle of the back, the height of the armrests, and the depth of the seat. The chair invites use without dictating posture or setting.
In this way, it continues Mogensen’s enduring approach to design - furniture shaped by function, material logic, and the rhythms of daily life.
